Smartphones and the internet: Shifting our lifestyles

Posted on February 21, 2021 by Marvin Douglas

With the invention of smartphones, social media applications, and the advancement of the internet, people rely on their smartphones to communicate, socialize, entertain themselves and search for information in the comfort of their sofa at home. Social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat excel at providing entertainment as it provides a platform for people to post whatever they wish, with restrictions of course. In addition to that, these social media apps provide a platform for companies to interact with their customers with ease.

As the number of social media users increase substantially, it becomes more apparent that every company must adapt to the current circumstances to continue operating. The current change is not a trend that just disappears into thin air within three months, it is a lifestyle change that everyone is adapting and developing into. Social marketing services in Malaysia are one of the many services that are adapting to this change by providing services to bigger companies like McDonald’s, Maybank, Borders and Celcom to make their presence more noticeable. Some of their services include but not limited to: search engine optimization, advertising, community management, creative content and many more. Youtube has become a staple of entertainment for streaming videos as well as it does not restrict anyone from making any kind of content except sexual content. One can easily find almost any videos that they want to watch or music to listen to in the background while they’re working, doing chores or just for relaxing in their living room.

With that many apps being used by so many users all over the world, they are prone to be exposed to advertisements online that will appear on their feed. Advertisements have grown to adapt with the changing lifestyles as well as most companies resorting to focus more on their resources to digital as most of their consumers are now online. Online services are more common and the introduction of a social media team in the company can help to communicate with the consumers and provide advertising strategies that may appeal towards the newer generation. Social media teams these days have a strong influence when they interact with their consumers because they have adapted an informal way of interacting with their consumers to make consumers feel more comfortable during interactions. Wendy’s was the first company to change how online interaction works between customers and consumers by using memes and snarky comments. This has boosted Wendy’s reputation and other companies such as Discord, Supergiant Inc and Mihoyo were inspired and allow social media teams to interact with their consumers more nonchalantly.

As technology continues to develop and enhance, we will be seeing a future where augmented reality becomes a common use for everyone and the future where we hope for flying cars and advanced prosthetics to become a reality. But, don’t count on those happening any time during this life cycle since we still haven’t figured out how augmented reality works and we haven’t invented a method for cars to fly yet.
